A Lancashire city above the Ribble

Preston’s centre brings together shopping streets, civic buildings and a working market, with the River Ribble and parkland just to the south. The Harris and Flag Market make a useful starting point, while Fishergate connects the central streets towards the railway station.

The city has an industrial and commercial history, but it is also a place for everyday errands, study, food and community life. Choose a few nearby stops and leave time to explore rather than treating every attraction as one continuous shopping street.

The Harris and the civic centre

The Harris combines museum collections, art and a library in its landmark Market Square building. It reopened in September 2025 following a major restoration, with a renewed programme of exhibitions, activities and visitor facilities. Use its current website for what is available on the day.

The Flag Market is the civic open space beside The Harris. Preston Markets is a separate nearby destination, with its Market Hall, Box Market and covered outdoor trading area. The names are related geographically but are not interchangeable.

From the streets to the parks

Winckley Square provides a quieter green stop close to Fishergate, surrounded by Georgian buildings and local history. Further south, Avenham and Miller Parks lie beside the Ribble, with landscaped slopes and riverside paths.

Check routes and access points before walking down to the river, especially if steps or gradients are difficult for your group. A shorter circuit through the square or a chosen part of the parks can be more enjoyable than an ambitious route.

Understand the wider Preston area

Fulwood, Ribbleton, Cottam and Riversway sit within the wider city. Nearby Penwortham, Bamber Bridge and Longton are in South Ribble; Garstang and Bilsborrow are in Wyre. Other listed businesses have bases in Longridge or the Fylde area.

This directory shows actual locations rather than calling every Preston postal address city centre. Check the base and service area before arranging a visit. For transport, use current operators’ timetables and official travel information instead of assuming a direct route between every community.
