Begin with The Harris
The Harris on Market Square is a central choice for art, history, reading and changing activities. Its museum, gallery and library share a building that reopened after restoration in September 2025. Check the current exhibitions and any bookable sessions on its official website.
Allow time to enjoy the building as well as a particular collection. If you are visiting with children or have access requirements, use the venue’s information to plan entrances, facilities and the parts of the programme that suit your group.
Take the parks at your own pace
Avenham and Miller Parks offer Victorian parkland beside the River Ribble, with formal features, open slopes and paths. A short visit can be as worthwhile as a longer walk. Check council notices and choose access points that fit your mobility and the weather.
The Guild Wheel is a much longer walking and cycling circuit around Preston, not a quick extension to every family outing. If you want to try it, plan the route, distance and conditions separately and share paths considerately.
Discover railway heritage at Riversway
Ribble Steam Railway and Museum is based on Chain Caul Road at Riversway, by the former docks. The attraction explores industrial railway history, with train rides on operating dates and special events in its published calendar.
It is a separate journey from the Market Square area, so check directions and the event programme before setting out. A railway ride, a museum visit and a seasonal event may have different ticket arrangements; use the attraction’s current booking information.
Add a small local stop
Winckley Square is close enough to central shopping streets to include as a quieter pause. Its friends group publishes walks, history and activities, with dates and participation details to check before attending. Preston Markets adds food and independent traders to a central visit.
For a wet-weather alternative, look at a family play cafe or another organised activity and confirm age ranges, booking and supervision. Keep a little time for food and travel rather than packing too many destinations into one day.
